Abstract

In order to improve the efficiency of healthcare institutions, it is essential to improve the quality of services and the well-being of the personnel. Nurses are a crucial human resource, for whom better schedules lead to better quality of service, job satisfaction and well-being. Consequently, the problem of scheduling nursing staff has received considerable attention in the recent decades. In practice, schedules are usually generated manually by head nurses. However, this task is often difficult and time-consuming. In this paper, a mathematical model is proposed to solve the nurse scheduling problem for a case study from a French hospital department. The proposed approach offers the possibility of an efficient scheduling that satisfies the constraints of working time regulations, balances the workload and satisfies nurses' preferences. The results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach compared with manual scheduling.
