Dear Colleagues, Partners and Friends,
We invite you to submit a contribution to the 9th Swiss Text Analytics Conference (SwissText) which takes place on June 10-11, 2024 in Chur, Switzerland at the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons (FH Graubünden).
SwissText is an annual conference that brings together text analytics experts from industry and academia. It is organized by the Swiss Association for Natural Language Processing (SwissNLP) in collaboration with the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons (FH Graubünden) as well as the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) and the data innovation alliance.
SwissText 2024 is part of the “Networking Event Series – Natural Language Processing” funded by InnoSuisse, the Swiss Innovation Agency. It is supported by more than 10 universities and scientific associations.
The conference will feature the following tracks:
- Applied track: Short abstract (approx 0.5-1 page) in the form of a talk, poster or Demo.
- Scientific Research
- Regular Track: Full paper (6-8 pages)
- Junior Track: Short paper (up to 4 pages), extended feedback, possibility to re-submit revised version
- Workshops and Shared Tasks

1. Applied track
The goal is to bring together experts from industry and academia. Authors are solicited to contribute to the Conference by submitting presentations with a strong focus on practical applicability.
The SwissText Conference features a dedicated track for demonstrations of available NLP solutions (open source or proprietary). The goal is to give developers, companies, and researchers a platform to showcase their products and tools, and for the audience to get an overview of available and prototyped NLP solutions. Submissions may cover all areas of applied NLP solutions
Presentations can be:
- Applications
- Applied research results
- Showcases
Submission Format:
- Short abstract (approx. 0.5-1 page of main content) including screenshots of your solution
- Language: English
- CV of the team (text format, no tables — max. 500 characters)
- Description of the intended audience (e.g. developers, decision makers, project managers, max. 300 characters)
- Please submit online via EasyChair
Presentation Mode:
- During submission you can choose your prefered presentation mode: talk, poster, or demo
- Talk: a classical presentation of approx. 15min + 5min discussion
- Poster: you can hang up a poster during the poster session. In A1 format
- Demo: you get a booth where you can show your solution as live-demo during the exhibition time (approx 2 hours)
- The SwissText Program Committee will decide which format your submission best fits in
2. Scientific Research
- The goal is to bring together experts from industry and academia. Authors are solicited to contribute to the Conference by submitting presentations with a strong focus on scientific research.
2.1 Regular track
Authors are solicited to contribute to the conference by submitting original papers that illustrate research results, projects, surveying works that describe new concepts, innovative research, systems, standards in the areas of NLP. (If you have a live demonstration, please submit to the Applied Track instead)
Submission Format:
- Full paper (6-8 pages of main content) using the ACL style
- Language: English
- Anonymization: The review process will be double blind; we ask authors to anonymize their submission reasonably. Instead of e.g. “We previously showed (Smith, 1991) …” write “Smith previously showed (Smith, 1991) …”
- CV of the presenter (text format, no tables — max. 500 characters)
- All data is entered online via EasyChair
Presentation Mode:
- Talk during the dedicated session. We reserve the right to convert some of the presentations to poster format should we deem it adequate.
2.2 Junior track

Master/PhD students who are doing research in NLP-related fields are solicited to contribute to the Conference by submitting ongoing or finished work relevant to the NLP field. (If you have a live demonstration, please submit to the Demo Track instead)
Several senior researchers in the NLP field in Switzerland have expressed their support for the initiative, and will be members of the programme committee. They will provide extensive reviews to the students to help them improve their paper writing skills.
Submission Format:
- Please use the ACL style
- Language: English
- Manuscripts for short papers (max. 4 pages of main content) must describe ongoing or finished work, relevant to the NLP field. The first author must be a student registered at a Swiss academic institution.
- Anonymization: The review process will be double blind; we ask authors to anonymize their submission reasonably. Instead of e.g. “We previously showed (Smith, 1991) …” write “Smith previously showed (Smith, 1991) …”
- CV of the presenter (text format, no tables — max. 500 characters). Please note that the first author must be a student registered in a Swiss academic institution.
- Submission will be made through EasyChair
Presentation Mode:
- Talk during the dedicated session. It is expected that the first author (or another student author of the same paper) will present the paper at SwissText 2024. We reserve the right to convert some of the presentations to poster format should we deem it adequate.
Proceedings
We plan to publish the proceedings in the ACL Anthology. To appear in the proceedings, each contribution has to be presented by at least one author at the conference.

3. Workshops
We invite Proposals for Workshops to be held at the SwissText 2024 conference. The main objective of the workshops is to facilitate the interaction and discussion on topics relevant for both industry and academia. We also encourage the submission of proposals for tutorials, hackathons as well as forums for discussions as well as potential new collaboration formats.
We strongly encourage to make the workshops highly interactive.
Workshops may, for example, follow the format of a
- Tutorial
- Panel Discussion
- Hackathon
- Competition
- Debate
- Or any other innovative format
Workshops can last from at least 2 hours to a half-day event.

Submission of proposals must be sent to: workshops@swisstext.org.
As part of your submission, please include the following information:
- Short section about the motivation and goals
- Tentative outline
- Short CV of the instructor(s)

4. Shared Tasks
We invite researchers to submit proposals for shared tasks involving English, French, German, Italian, Romansh, and Swiss German. Please keep in mind that the dataset used for your shared task should be shareable between all participants. As a shared task organiser you will be expected to coordinate the joint effort of all the interested participants.
If you wish, you can represent your shared task in the proceedings of SwissText 2024 by submitting task description and system description papers. Please note that you will be responsible for organising the submission and review process for your shared task and will be expected to provide the camera-ready papers to the SwissText organising committee by May 15, 2024

Next to your task and system description papers, please include the following information in your submission:
- Short section about the motivation and goals
- Tentative outline
- Short CV of the instructor
- Maximum number of participants
- A description of the publicity and promotion plan
- Why will the shared task attract a significant number of attendees, besides the organisers
